YADKIN COUNTY MANUFACTURER ANNOUNCES EXPANSION

Local and state officials today joined Nonni’s Foods representatives to celebrate the company’s expansion plans. The national specialty food company is opening a commercial bakery in Yadkinville, investing $27 million and adding 172 jobs during the next three years. The expansion was made possible in part by a $300,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

Nonni’s Food Co., headquartered in Illinois, is owned by Vivartia SA, an international food company headquartered in Greece with operations in 29 countries.  Nonni’s is establishing a commercial bakery in Yadkinville.  The new plant will make products the company has successfully marketed in Europe and other world markets.  Nonni’s is a specialty food marketer and manufacturer with leading positions in a number of premium markets, including biscotti, bagel and pita chips, flat breads, Melba toast.  The company has facilities throughout the U.S. and distributes the name brands of Nonni’s, New York Style, Old London and Devonsheer. 

Salaries for the 172 new positions will vary by job type, but the average annual wage will be $29,570 not including benefits.  That is more than the Yadkin County average annual wage of $26,156.

The company will hold a job fair May 8 at the Yadkin County Campus of Surry Community College.  Applications after that date will be accepted at any N.C. Employment Security Commission office.  Positions to be filled include packaging operators, oven operators, mixers and line service employees. The One North Carolina Fund provides financial assistance through local governments to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state.  Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds.  All of these grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.  

Through use of the One North Carolina Fund, more than 35,000 jobs and $6.5 billion in investment have been created since 2001.  Project partners include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Department of Revenue, N.C. Community Colleges, Yadkin County, the Town of Yadkinville, the Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce, Duke Energy and Frontier Utilities.  In addition, Unifi Inc., Binswinger Real Estate Co. and Epstein Engineering were all instrumental to the project.
