Chief of Staff George Sherrill
George Sherrill began his service to the people of North Carolina more than 40 years ago, a career state employee with a track record of increasing seniority and responsibility in the areas of economic and community development.
Prior to being appointed by North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Tony Copeland to serve as his Deputy and Chief of Staff, Governor Roy Cooper asked George to serve as the state’s Interim Secretary of Commerce, prior to Secretary Copeland’s appointment.
George has served many roles during his state service, including more than 30 years in various management capacities with the Department’s Community Development Block Grant Program, most recently as its Director. Earlier in his career, he worked as a grants manager for the N.C. Division of Air Quality and in the Governor’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations.
George earned a B.A. degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master in Public Administration from North Carolina State University. He retired with the rank of Captain from the United States Naval Reserve after completing 28 years of service.
Despite his many career accomplishments, George considers one of his most significant achievements this milestone from the fairway – Mr. Sherrill is the current match play champion at his golf club in Raleigh.
